Canon GL2 Questions???(about resolution)?
I can buy the GL2 Stock from a friend’s friend for $1,000 flat… but i know that it isn’t a HD camcorder, so i’m kinda going back and forth about it.
i really would like an HD camera, but, can you compensate for the lack??
You cannot “compensate” for digital video information that was never captured.
The Canon GL2 is a really good prosumer camcorder that captures standard definiton DV or DV widescreen video. It has large lenses and imaging chips compared to the Canon HV30 or Sony HDR-HC9. The GL2 will behave much better in low-light than the HV30 or HDR-HC9.
If you get a high definition camcorder with lenses the same size or larger and imaging chips the same or larger than the GL2 – and mic jack and manual audio control that the GL2 has, then you start at the Sony HDR-FX7. I suppose you could look at the Sony HVR-A1 or HVR-HD1000 shoulder mount – but check their lenses and imaging chips… same as the HC9 and HV30…
The Canon HV30 and Sony HDR-HC9 have smaller lenses and imaging chips than the GL2, so they can’t exactly be compared. And any of the consumer camcorders that use hard drive or flash memory (Sony HDR-SR, HDR-XR, HDR-CX series; Canon HG or HF series) also have the smaller lenses – and while they have a mic jack, they do not have manual audio control.
HDV captures four times more data than standard definition DV. There is nothing you can do to compensate for this.
